I have been collecting music since the 80s. My first memory of mixtape from an uncle who sent my father a mixtape with his selection of the best of Little Richard on one side and the best of K.C. and the Sunshine Band on the other. My brother and I used to dance frantically in the living room listening to the tape over and over again. Later, I found out that after midnight, it was possible to tune into radio stations from big cities and would stay up recording songs I liked. In the 90s and 00s, I accumlated terabytes of music that I still have today. Now I am part of Magic Mixtape, Contrabando and Radio28. I don’t have a super rare collection nor are a super adept DJ, but I enjoy sharing and talking about music. It’s opened my mind and allowed me to meet a lot of people and learn about the perspectives of others through their music.
